Understanding Stress in Athletes

Discipline builds champions, but when does it become depletion?
In Japan, athletes often walk a harder path, balancing intense training with university, part-time jobs, and daily responsibilities. The result: layered fatigue. Physical strain meets academic pressure, financial stress, and social expectations, creating a silent weight many carry behind their performance.

The Normalization of Exhaustion

Cultural stigmas specific to competitive sport in Japan make it difficult for athletes to acknowledge mental health struggles, as developing mental problems is frequently equated with weakness and incapacity to deal with pressure [ Hogrefe ]. Exhaustion isn't seen as a warning sign, it's accepted as proof of commitment.

This silence has consequences. Depression among college athletes globally ranges from 15.6% to 21.0%, with training fatigue leading to depressive symptoms, burnout, eating disorders, and in severe cases, suicide.

Breaking the Silence

A survey among Japanese university student-athletes found that the COVID,  had affected both the physical and mental wellbeing of more than half of the respondents [PubMed Central ] When athletes were finally asked, the majority reported struggles.

The data exists. The need is clear. What's missing is the conversation.

Vulnerable athletes need appropriate emotional support to cope with stressful situations. However,  in competitive environments, vulnerability is often perceived as weakness.

Moving Forward

Mental health isn't separate from performance, it's fundamental to it. Teaching young athletes and active individuals skills to cope with stressors, and teaching coaches and teammates about social support can decrease athletes' stress reactions, such as anxiety or depressive symptoms [ PubMed]

For those who managing multiple responsibilities: recognize that stress accumulates beyond training, asking for support is strategic optimization, and sustainable excellence requires protecting both physical and mental recovery.
